Neu Vegetarian Restaurant: Reviews & Ratings

I went to Neu Vegetarian Restaurant twice on a recent trip home. The restaurant has a pretty extensive menu of mostly Chinese vegetarian dishes. Most Chinese vegetarian dishes tend to be vegan by default but do check with the server to make sure nothing is prepared with eggs or dairy. Vegetarianism is very common in Malaysia and most restaurants are used to requests for egg- and dairy-free meals. Many servers will even check if you're okay with garlic and onions as some Taoist vegetarians don't consume either. Okay, the food. The dishes are typical of most Malaysian Chinese vegetarian restaurants but are prepared very nicely here. Flavourful but not overly salty. The portions are generous and the prices very reasonable. I was lucky to dine family style each time and wasn't (overly) limited in what to order. Over the course of two meals we had the asam fish (soy fish in a tangy tamarind sauce), claypot tofu, sliced tofu with mushrooms, kangkung belacan (water spinach with vegetarian shrimp paste), sauteed olive green beans, dry chillies and chicken (kung pao style), curry fish in claypot, stir fried lotus root, sweet and sour crispy mushrooms and the yam basket. We also had both versions of the dessert sago (honeydew and mango). Everything was delicious! If I had to pick any favourites, they would be the green beans, sweet and sour mushrooms and dry chillies with chicken. My omnivore dining companions enjoyed everything too, and all the plates were cleaned. The restaurant is in a part of town that's not very convenient as the closest LRT station (Taman Jaya) is about a 15-20 minute walk away and parking can be very tough. Neu is worth checking out, though, and I highly recommend it for a tasty, affordable meal in a comfortable, friendly environment. I'll definitely come back on future trips.
